MY STORY

I essentially left Vietnam by myself at the age of 5. I left my country, my home, my mother, and my culture behind me. As I stepped inside the airport, the world around me got blacked out and all I can focus on was my mom standing outside the clear windows. Before I stepped onto the plane, I remember my mom saying, "Long Nu, you are my child. I love you with all of my heart. I'm coming to get you tomorrow. Don't cry. This is just for a little bit. I promise, I will be with you soon. This is for you." As a child, I did what my mother told me to do. Till this day, I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

Gaining an education in America was one of the main reasons why my mom sent me here. If I were to stay in Vietnam, I wouldn't be able to get access to primary or secondary education. My mom was basically my teacher and she taught me everything that I knew. We were too poor and we didn't have enough money for school. Not even one class. When I came to America, everything was foreign to me and I didn't know one single English word. You can imagine how hard it was for me to fit in with the crowd.

My name is Long Nu Nhan. I was born on October 20th, 1994. Today, I am 18 years old and am thankful everyday for my home, my family, and my freedom here in America - all of which would not have been rightfully mine if I resided in my home country, Vietnam. I am now a senior and I'm days away from receiving my diploma. I never thought that I would be in the position I am today. I can't thank God enough for guiding me throughout these years. With that being said...
